What We Do

Our Commitment

Republic Services is committed to being a good neighbor in the communities we serve. Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill is committed to operating with environmental practices and policies that are good for our customers, local businesses and residents.

Initiatives

Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill is operated in a manner designed to protect public health and the environment. We regularly monitor and report our activities to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), and we strive to meet or exceed all state and federal regulations. All waste is disposed of within the boundary of the constructed landfill area, which has been engineered to protect the environment. See below for additional information about Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill’s environmental protection systems.

Landfill gas, a byproduct of decomposing waste, is collected through a sophisticated system of more than 300 gas collection wells. This gas is then converted to renewable energy through a partnership with Opal Fuels. The gas-to-energy plant can power the equivalent of 10,000 homes.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill actively manages 165 acres of wetlands, grasslands and mixed hardwood forests for wildlife. The Landfill’s wildlife team routinely logs the variety of species that are observed in the different habitats around the site, including white-tailed deer and otter, wood ducks, mallards, bluebirds and cardinals.

Protection of all water sources is a priority at Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill. The Landfill is designed with a highly engineered composite liner system that is designed to contain any liquids that percolate through the solid waste. We also utilize a network of 44 groundwater wells that routinely monitor and verify groundwater conditions.

We manage landfill gas through an expansive gas collection system. In addition, the Landfill utilizes mister and soil sealants to reduce dust from disposal activities and further control the potential for off-site odor. Charlotte Motor Speedway Landfill also conducts daily odor patrols in nearby neighborhoods and thoroughly investigates every report of potential off-site odor.

Collection

Republic Services collects waste throughout the state of North Carolina.

Collection process
Transfer

Transfer stations aggregate waste collection by multiple collection agencies in a single place. By combining waste into one transfer truck, we have fewer vehicles on the road and reduce emissions.

Transfer process
Landfill

Waste is carefully compacted and covered daily to limit wind-blown debris and odors, and create a stable engineered hill.

Landfill process
Sustainability

Republic Services operates Mecklenburg County’s recycling center. Each year, we process approximately 80,000 tons of material for recycling, which helps minimize waste deposited in the landfill.
